The Visitor, who is the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, holds the University in trust for the Nation.

The Principal Officers of this University are; the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Bursar and University Librarian. The Principal Officers collectively administer the academic, administrative and financial interests of the University.

The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University. He confers Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees to deserving individuals. The Pro-Chancellor is the Chairman of the Governing Council. He directs the policy implementations on behalf of Federal Government as the proprietor. The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of the University and is directly in-charge of its day- to- day running and management. The Registrar, Bursar and Librarian are responsible to the Vice-Chancellor in the discharge of their duties. The University operates through a committee system, and as such various committees responsible for various aspects of the life of the system had been put in place, and are regularly meeting and reporting ultimately to the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice- Chancellor being the Chairman of Senate provides academic leadership, working through statutory and ad-hoc committees of Senate such as Academic Planning and Development Committee, Students’ Disciplinary Committee, Admissions Committee, Examination Committee, Examination Misconduct Committee, Time- table Committee, Students’ Welfare Committee and the University Research and Publication Committee. The Vice-Chancellor also presides over congregations and matriculations.

The Senate of the University is the supreme academic authority, with powers to nurture, regulate, coordinate and generally develop a culture of scholarship and academic excellence through teaching, research and community service. Senate scrutinizes and approves curricula, new academic programmes, as well as Faculties and Departments. In addition, it manages and regulates the conduct and eligibility for examinations, approves results and confers Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees. In conjunction with academic Departments, Senate ensures the effectiveness of teaching, learning and research by instituting quality control measures, grants for research, students discipline etc.

The University holds congregation meetings on an annual basis. During such meetings every stakeholder has a chance to air his/her views and contribute to the development of the university.


Convocation is an avenue for the administration, Senate and Alumni to meet during graduation of students. The University is at its fourth year of academic activities and is about to graduate its first graduates.



The first Governing Council of the University was inaugurated on 5th May 2015 with the following membership:

Internal Members (Convocation)

The Governing Council was dissolved on Thursday, 11th February, 2016 by the Federal Government and reconstituted same day. The Council was formally inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Education on Tuesday 1st March, 2016 at the National Universities Commission, Abuja. The following are the members of the reconstituted Council for FUK.

The four internal members representing Senate will be elected at the next Senate meeting scheduled for 30th March, 2016 and the two Congregation representatives will be elected on 31st March, 2016. Thereafter, the Pro-Chancello &Chairman of Council will fix a convenient date of the inaugural meeting of the second Council.


Academic Activities

Academic activities at Federal University , Kashere commenced with the matriculation of pioneer students on Monday 6th August, 2012 under the supervision of the then Honorable Minister of Education , Professor Ruqayyat Ahmed Rufa’i . The University started with two (2) Faculties: Humanities, Management and Social Sciences and Sciences. In the 2012/ 2013 academic session, Faculties of Agriculture and Education were established . FUK currently offers 36 Degree programmes in 20 Departments and four Faculties as follows:

The first set of intakes in 2011/2012 academic session was 270 students made up of 157 male students and 113 female students. Currently, the University has a student population of 2,970 and a staff population of 1,059 comprising academic and non academic staff. This includes 354 academic staff, 216 senior non-teaching staff and 489 junior non-academic staff


Accreditation of Academic Programmes

The National Universities Commission in September 2015 accredited all 22 of our degree programmes presented to it for review out of which 9 earned full accreditation status while the remaining 13 earned interim accreditation status. It is worthy of note that non of our degree programmes has denied accreditation status. Efforts are underway to address the identified needs and challenges in order to maintain our goal of 100% accreditation of all our programmes.


Bursary Department

The Bursary is responsible for the control and disbursement of all finances of the University under the direct supervision of the Bursar who in turn is responsible to the Vice-chancellor. The Bursary prepares budgets and financial proposals of the University and prepares financial statements on annual basis as required by law. The Bursary has the following units:

  5. Loans and Advances Unit

  6. Cash Office

  7. Pension and Insurance Unit

  8. Budget Unit

  9. Central Stores

The Honorable Minister of Education approved the appointment of Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu as the Bursar on 5th May, 2015 for a single term of five years. See attached appendix 2 for 2016 operational budget.


Physical Growth and Development.

At inception office and residential accommodation were secured for the Vice – Chancellor and Registrar by the Gombe State Government in Gombe. In addition, Gombe State Government provided 127 hectares of land and the donation of Government Day Secondary School, Kashere which served as the take-off site for the University, as well as the donation of Agricultural Training School, Tumu with about 133 hectares which the University intends to use to serve as Faculty of Agriculture. The following projects were executed for the take-off of the University:Science Laboratory Complex, Classrooms, 2 Faculty Buildings, one for the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, the other for Faculty of Science. Other Buildings are ICT Centre, Library, University Auditorium, Academic Staff Offices building, Administrative Staff Offices Building, University Clinic, Female Student Hostel and the Student Centre. All these buildings were furnished and equipped. The buildings were executed through the initial N1.5b given to the University for the take-off through Tetfund Special Intevention. The university executed some capital projects for 2012. These include provision of vehicles, building of staff quarters, student hostels, landscaping of the take-off site and fuel dump.The sum of N2B was also allocated through 2012 TETfund Special Intervention (Prototype Buildings Construction) for the following projects: Administrative block/senate building; ICT Centre; Library and Faculty Buildings.These projects were managed by the Federal Ministry of Education snd National Universities Commission. In addition to the above the University also benefitted from 2012 TETFund Special Presidential Intervention (Prototype Students Hostels Construction to the tune of N1.2B. this include 1 no. 280 capacity Male student hostel and 1.no. 280 capacity Female student hostel. See attached appendix 1 for performance of projects.


The Library stocks information materials mostly in the following fields; Agriculture, Education, Humanities, Social Science, Pure Science and Technology. There are 6,369 volumes of books, 1,732 volumes of periodicals and thousands of Electronic books and Journals across all the University’s current programmes. The Library is

organized into six Divisions namely; Office of the University Librarian, Information Resource Development, Technical Services, Reader Services, Serial and E-Library and Digitization. The Honorable Minister of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Abu Yusufu as the University Librarian on 5th May, 2015 for a single term of five years.


ICT Centre

The use of information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated into the delivery of all courses and programmes. ICT is also used as a tool for communication, research , learning and instruction at FUK . To this end, a reliable internet Wi fi connected throughout the campus was provided . The ICT centre is fully equipped and every member of the FUK family shall be ICT complaint in a possible shortest moment. ICT has been deployed through the provision of the following: Deployment of 20mbps/20mbps internet connectivity through Airtel Network, Deployment of online admission checking portal, an online registration portal and the Online Management and Information System (MIS) Portal, deployment of Fibre Optic back bone inranet network (in progress), deployment of a Video conferencing equipment(in progress), Procurement and Installation of Computers desktops for the ICT Directorate, Deployment of E-Library Centre and the construction of new ICT centre to be commission soon (90% completion stage).


Academic linkages

FUK has signed Memoranda of Understanding on a range of areas of partnership and collaborations with the following institutions: Florida International University, Miami, Florida, USA, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and Lincoln University, Lincoln New Zealand. The University has earned the hosting of an Institute of Maritime Studies to train manpower for the maritime industry. The Institute is taking off at temporary sites at Kashere and Hinna. Enterprenurship programme is one area of pragmatic emphasis for the University (others are Agriculture and Education). It also entered partnership with the Gombe State Government on skills acquisition training for youth at the Kashere Skills Acquisition Centre.
