HISTORY

The Department of Geography is one of the pioneers established in the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences at inception of Federal University, Kashere during the 2011/2012 session along with other departments. The Department of Geography is therefore one of the foundation departments of the university in 2011 when it took off. It was given the mandate to run the B.Sc Geography degree programme. It was initially headed by an overseer, Mal. Ahmed Abdullahi and later, specifically August, 2014, Dr Adam Modu Abbas was a senior lecturer appointed as the first substantive Head of Department.

The first set of the students were admitted into 100 level in the 2011/2012 academic session. During the first session (2011/2012), a total of 20 students were enrolled and the number increased steadily in the subsequent sessions as shown in Table 1. The number of staff has also increased both in quantity and quality because at inception, the department had only four academic staff with the maximum qualification of MSc degree. It now has a total number of 17 with the staff/student ratio of 1:18. Seven of the staff members are PhD holders.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to train geography students to clearly understand the physical and human environment from a global perspective and also have an in-depth knowledge of the implications of global environmental dynamics on the local environment.

Philosophy and Objectives

The programme is guided by the philosophy that well-informed global citizens must have a clear understanding of global human and environmental dynamics in order to derive new ideas for positive change. Based on this philosophy, the main objectives of the BSc Geography program are stated as follows:

  1. To develop students understanding of physical and human landscapes, and introduce them to different societies and cultures, enhancing awareness of global interdependence

  2. To expose students to the understanding of global environmental dynamics and its implications to the local environment with a view to making them environmentally conscious.

  3. To assist students acquire practical skills that would enable them become wealth creators rather than job seekers.

  4. To prepare students to face the challenges of national development through the application of refined knowledge, skills and solution driven innovations.

National Relevance of the Program

Geography is a dynamic subject that is firmly grounded in the real world and focuses on the interactions among individuals, societies and the physical environment in both time and space. It seeks to identify trends and patterns in these interactions and examines the processes behind them. It also investigates the way that people adapt and respond to change and evaluates management strategies associated with such change. Geography describes and helps to explain the similarities and differences between spaces and places. These may be defined on a variety of scales and from a range of perspectives.

The complexity of the Nigerian society and seriousness of its developmental challenges left us with no option rather than develop a well informed human resource that can lead the nation towards meeting its national objectives. The bachelor’s degree in Geography will prepare students to face national and local developmental challenges from a wider perspective (Geography being a bridge between social and natural sciences) that would allow them make rational judgment and provide viable and practical solutions to the nation’s multitude of developmental challenges.
